Fundraising Dinner for Iranian Disaster a Success

The fundraising dinner in aid of the recent Iranian earthquake, hosted by the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) and the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship (CFIF), came to a successful conclusion on March 10, 2004.

The dinner party of twenty-eight tables was held at the Century Palace Chinese Restaurant in Markham in an atmosphere of warm fellowship. Guests not only enjoyed a delicious Chinese banquet, but were also entertained with performances of music and song. They also opened their wallets generously for the charity sale and the raffle draw, thus adding to the funds already raised by the sale of dinner tickets and by sponsors.

In his address to the gathering, Dr. Ken Ng as Chairman of F.C.C.M., and President of C.F.I.F. stated that the main purpose of the dinner was to raise money for the victims of the Iranian earthquake which took place last December. The city of Bam was devastated, the death toll and casualties were astronomical, and the city was in dire need of emergency and medical supplies. In the spirit of community fellowship and mutual care, FCCM decided to host this dinner in order to contribute to the recovery of the city. Net proceeds of the evening will be donated to the Iranian Relief Fund of the Canadian Red Cross.

The success of the evening was due to the unstinting support of the community. Among those present were Hon. Jim Karygiannis M.P., York Region Chief of Police Armand LaBarge, Councillor Alex Chiu, Councillor Khalid Usman and many more. Representative of Hon. McCallum M.P., Minister of Veteran Affairs, also presented a certificate of appreciation to F.C.C.M. and C.F.I.F. for the goodwill and leadership to the community. DJ Don Choi, singers Beverlee Buzon and Kay Santos, and Chinese instrumentalist Li Riu delighted the audience with their beautiful songs and music.

During the dinner, Dr. Ng and Mr. Ray Chiu were presented with club jackets by the FCCM Basketball Team as a token of appreciation for their leadership. The guests gave the team a round of applause as a show of support for the team’s competition in Montreal next month.

Also took place was the graduation ceremony of FCCM’s “Beginners’ Course for Tourism Recruits” where seventy participants graduated. FCCM Vice President Danny Li awarded the certificates to the graduates who had just taken the first step towards a new career.

The dinner party ended with dancing to DJ music into the deep of the night.

LETTER FROM DR. KEN NG

Dear Friends:

This past December the nation of Iran was victim to one of nature’s severest disasters. A 6.7 earthquake leveled the city of Bam, claimed the lives of more than fifty-thousand and leaves many more wounded and homeless. Through hope and determination the Iranian people have endured the difficult work of rebuilding their lives, however, much support from the international community is still needed. On March 10, 2004, the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) and Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship (CFIF) will jointly hold a fundraising dinner for the Bam Earthquake Relief fund.

FCCM and CFIF are not-for profit organizations with its focus on enhancing relationships between the various cultures in Canada. Formed in 2002, CFIF is composed of community representatives from various ethnic groups, among which include South Asian, Arabian, Italian, Caribbean, African, Muslim and Chinese. FCCM is dedicated to the provision of services to the Chinese community and the integration of Chinese Canadians into mainstream Canada. Since its establishment in 1989, FCCM has engaged the community with a variety of social, cultural and business activities and has been a supporter of local organizations including the United Way of York Region, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Science Centre, Versa Care of Rexdale, Horsman Varley Art Gallery, Markham-Stouffville Hospital and the Canadian Red Cross. It is the firm belief of CFIF and FCCM that intercultural exchange of ideas and principles promotes understanding and acceptance between Canada’s diverse groups, results in non-violent and non-prejudiced methods of solving problems, and fosters community harmony and safety.

Knowing of the unfortunate events befalling Bam, CFIF and FCCM recognize a responsibility to act so as to realize the organizational aim of promoting intercultural support and friendship. By helping our Iranian brothers and sisters through these difficult times, we shall demonstrate the spirit of being Canadian, a multicultural nation of peoples who see beyond all differences and willing to cross all borders when required to help our fellow human beings. We kindly invite your attendance on March 10th at the Century Palace Restaurant in Markham (Steeles and Warden) in support of a virtuous cause. Fundsraised will be given to the Red Cross/Red Crescent for distribution to Iran.

Many thanks and appreciation for your support.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Ken Ng
Chairman, Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham
And
President, Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship
