PRESS RELEASE
CRARR HOSTS SPECIAL TRAINING SEMINAR
ON RACIAL PROFILING WITH THE ACLU
For
Immediate Release
MONTREAL, Monday, May 12, 2003 --- In cooperation with
the Institute for Research and Education on Race Relations,
CRARR will hold a special training seminar on civil
rights strategies to fight racial profiling, on Saturday,
June 7, 2003, in Montreal.
The key resource person will be Mr. King Downing, National
Coordinator of the Racial Profiling Campaign at the
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in New York City.
The ACLU is the leading U.S. organization in the fight
against racial profiling at the federal, state and local
levels, in policing, customs, immigration, commercial
and public transport and national security sectors.
Mr. Downing will present the dynamics of racial profiling,
the state of American law, the ACLU's strategies and
major litigation cases and court decisions related to
racial profiling.
There will be a special focus on law enforcement in
the post-September 11 context. The seminar, which will
be in English only, is addressed to civil rights and
criminal lawyers and community advocates who are actively
or who plan to be involved in civil rights education
and litigation against racial profiling.
The seminar will be held after CRARR's Conference on
racial profiling on June 6, which will bring together
resource people from federal and Ontario organizations,
such as the Canadian Human Rights Commission, the Ontario
Human Rights Commission and the Canadian Race Relations
Foundation, among others. Made possible with funding
from the Multiculturalism Program of the Department
of Canadian Heritage and the ministère de l'Éducation
du Québec, the conference will examine racial
profiling as a practice and a legal concept in Canada,
and seek specific solutions in terms of legislation,
training, community prevention and litigation.
A special fee is available for individuals wishing to
attend both activities: $100,00 for independent professionals
(lawyers, consultants, etc.) and $70 for community representatives.
Registration fees for the June 6 conference alone are
$70 for independent professionals and $50 for community
representatives. A portion of the registration fees
is tax-deductible.
CRARR is a Montreal-based non-profit organization dedicated
to the achievement of racial harmony and equality in
Canada. Founded in 1983, CRARR specializes in research,
education, litigation and training on antiracism.
