Canada
Day, also known as Dominion Day, is a Canadian national
holiday observed on July 1st to celebrate the confederation
of Canada. Since its discovery,
Canada had been under French rule for over a century
until it was won by the British in 1763. For the next
century, Canada was made up of individual colonies.
Confederation took place on July 1, 1867 under the
British North America Act which created the Dominion
of Canada, then consisting of the 4 provinces of Ontario,
Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Since then,
Canada had gradually expanded to include the provinces
of Manitoba, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and the Yukon
and Northwest Territories and the recently added Nunavut,
forming a country that spanned the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans from coast to coast.
To mark this special and important
day, patriotic programs, flag displays, parades, athletic
and social events are held across the nation, usually
crowned off with spectacular fireworks at the end
of the day.
