“Taste of Asia 2005” Singing
Contest Semi Finals

The semi-finals of the first
“Taste of Asia” singing contest took place
at the MHQ Karaoke Box on the evening of June 12, 2005.
Response to the contest had been very enthusiastic,
with competitors ranging from twelve to eighty years
old, and they were a multi-cultural group, a true manifestation
of the theme of multiculturalism behind the “Taste
of Asia” Street Festival. The entrants did a terrific
job in performing at their best. |

The panel of judges included
Larry Lo, Michael Chen, Roger Feng, Evelyn Ip, Ken Zheng,
Daniel Chan and Francis Wong. After three exciting hours,
the following twelve finalists were named: Kristine
Cristobal, Jacky Tai, Ivan Chan, Maida Dalmacio, Randy
Muere, Matthew Wong, Sebastian Cheung, Kenneth Wu, Henry
Lau,, Ricky Wong, Charles Lau and Eric Tang. |
| The singing contest is one
of the programmes of “Taste of Asia 2005”
and is organized by the Federation of Chinese Canadians
in Markham with the sponsorship of Jacco Tours and MHQ
Karaoke Box. The winner’s package includes a $1000.00
cash prize, a deluxe 9-day trans-Canada tour and a $100.00
MHQ coupon. The first runner-up will receive a cash
prize of $300.00, a 7-day Prince Edward Island tour,
and a $100.00 MHQ coupon, while the second runner-up
will receive $200.00 cash, a 3-day Quebec-Montreal tour,
and $100.00 MHQ coupon. The “Most Popular Singer”
award is sponsored by Pepsi Cola, with a cash prize
of $200.00 plus a $300.00 MHQ coupon. |

| “Taste of Asia 2005”
is co-hosted by the Town of Markham, the Federation
of Chinese Canadians in Markham, the Association of
Progressive Muslims of Ontario, Market Village and Remington
Group, with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
It will take place on June 25 and 26 at Kennedy and
Steeles with extended hours till 10 pm. The event will
be highlighted by a live outdoor concert of Elton John
hits and a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by
Splendid China. |

Malaysia Airlines and Tourism
Malaysia-Canada will continue their support this year
by donating 2 Toronto-Kuala Lumpur round trip tickets
with a four-night stay in a five star hotel as the grand
prize for the festival’s free lucky draw. |
| During
the two days, from 6 am on June 25 to 9 pm on June 26,
the section of Kennedy Road, the site of the festival,
will be blocked to traffic to ensure the safety of the
visitors. Activities will be from 11 am to 10 pm on
the 25th, and 11 am to 6 pm on the 26th with ample time
for setting up and cleaning afterwards. For the convenience
of visitors to the festival, shuttle services will be
available at the Unionville Go Train Station on Kennedy,
Town of Markham Municipal Building (Hwy 7 and Warden),
Milliken Community Centre on Kennedy, and Denison Centre
(Denison and Kennedy). |
